Siege of Singapore

Singapore

On the 31st December 1941 Percival assumed command of the 85,000 troops on Singapore Island, these consistered of thirteen British battalions, six Australian, seventeen Indian and two Malay, giving him nearly a total strength three divisions. With another three machine gun battalions it looked impresive but the reality was that most of the troops were fresh to combat and the troops that retreated from Malaya had been badly cut up.

Siege Begins 

Siege Begins - Feb 1st - The siege began officially with the blowing up of the causeway at 0800 hours on 31st January 1942, the explosion could be heard on the south coast of Singapore.

Yamshita's Bluff 

Yamashita’s Bluff - Feb 5th - He was down to 18 tanks, his infantry could only be allowed 100 rounds per man per day, the fuel supplies were held up between Singora and Johore and the men would only be getting two bowls of rice each per day.

Singapore Attacked 

Singapore Attacked - Feb 9th - In the late evening of the 8th February at 2330 hours the Japanese landing craft pushed away from Johore heading for the North-west shore of Singapore.

Battle for Bukit Timah 

Battle for Bukit Timah - Feb 10th - This was the centre of the island and the last line of defense before Singapore City.

Final Assualt 

Final Assualt - Feb 13th - Yamashita gives the orders for the final assault this will be a two pronged attack against the defenses of Singapore City, the 18th Division are to attack along the south coast towards Alexandra Barracks and the Imperial Guard are to capture the Reservoirs.

Surrender 

Surrender - Feb 15th - After a meeting on the morning of 15th February 1942, Percival concluded, the supplies were just about exhausted and there was little left to defend.
